The mission of the Associate Pastor of Discipleship is to support the teaching ministries of First Baptist Church, counsel individuals as requested, shepherd the congregation, and oversee ministries of First Baptist Church as directed.


A Bachelor’s Degree in any discipline is preferred or pastoral ministry experience may be substituted in lieu of a formal degree.

A minimum of two years of experience in pastoral ministry is preferred, with responsibilities in education, counseling, and Pastoral care.

Skills preferred:

training, writing of study materials and curriculum, group facilitation, counseling, public speaking, people management, program management, and leadership


I. Discipleship Development (Percent of time – 30%)

  • Provide ongoing training and development of teachers and leaders in all areas of church ministries.

  • Develop teaching materials to emphasize and enhance discipleship in all areas of church ministries.

  • Develop leadership training material to help identify and equip new leaders within the church body.

  • Facilitate and promote community groups and one-on-one mentoring relationships to build discipleship relationships.

II. Counseling (Percent of time - 20%)

  • Counsel individuals, couples, and families as the church’s main counselor.

  • Develop counseling training material to raise up and equip lay counselors within the church.

  • Keep current on theological and practical ideas/trends in Biblical Counseling.

III. Shepherding Care (Percent of time – 20%)

  • Make pastoral care visits to homes, hospitals, nursing homes, visitors to the church, etc.

  • Develop a shepherding care team, made up of church leaders and other lay people, to care for the congregation and to track visitation.

  • Take part, along with the other associate pastors, when needed, to assist with funerals, preaching, etc.

IV. Oversight of Church Ministries (Percent of time – 30%)

  • Oversee the Beacon of Hope Family Care Center.

  • Oversee adult Sunday school small groups and classes, including the development and provision of curriculum and providing teachers/facilitators for each group/class.

  • Oversee the Bible Institute curriculum and classes, including the development of a long-term plan for the ministry.
