Student Pastor

PURPOSE OF POSITION

To oversee and develop the ministry to High School and Middle School students and to work with the pastoral team in providing spiritual leadership.

REPORTS TO:

Matt Reynolds, Senior Pastor

RELATES CLOSELY WITH:

Pastoral and office staff team, parents of students, members, elders

Measurable Criteria:

  • Agreement with our church’s mission, values, strategy, measures, and statement of faith
  • At least a Bachelor's degree (B.A. or B.S.) from four-year college or university (with major in Bible or Christian Ministry preferred).  
  • Preferable three years youth ministry experience in a growing youth ministry
  • Experience managing others

  • A passion for the Gospel of Jesus Christ and God’s glory
  • A heart to love students, believer or unbeliever, where they are and point them to Jesus Christ
  • Able to disciple students to follow Jesus Christ so that they can disciple others
  • A growing grasp of the Bible, theology, and apologetics
  • Effectively communicate God’s Word to students
  • Capable of helping students own their own faith by knowing what they believe and why they believe what they believe
  • A desire to encourage and support the parents of the student
  • Teachable, with a desire to grow in their faith and abilities
  • A self-starter—highly motivated
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Team player with effective relational skills (works well with others)

ONGOING RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead, organize, plan, and build youth ministry that is consistent with the mission, values, measures, and overarching strategy of Midlothian Bible Church
  • Oversee, delegate, and work with your student ministry secretary
  • Plan spiritual growth gatherings, activities and events that include opportunities for kids to worship, experience community, learn Biblical truths and apply them to their lives (spiritual growth)
  • Plan gatherings, activities or events, developing students who want to minister, lead, reach out and serve others, impacting them with the love of Christ (student leadership)
  • Involve students in the youth ministry and ministry of the church as a whole, supporting and participating in the church’s vision, worship services, and activities
  • Set a budget that reflects ministry priorities and be prudent with finances, sticking with the budget you set
  • Teach , disciple, mentor, counsel and relate to students
  • Develop a flexible 3-year scope and sequence for middle school teaching opportunities and a 4-year for the high school, so parents and volunteers know the general direction
  • Help students grow in their understanding of the Bible, theology, and apologetics
  • Disciple students in small groups and/or one -on-one so that they learn a model to be able to disciple others
  • Meet regularly with students in order to build relationships with students and to create doors for teaching, mentoring, discipleship, and counseling
    • Befriend several unchurched kids with no strings attached, a great vehicle for this is the mentoring program in our local public school
    • Seek out opportunities to “hang out” with kids on campus, at sports events, or in the community
  • Recruit, equip, and encourage volunteers
  • Recruit a team of adult volunteers to be ready to go each ministry season
  • Every student should know an adult who is praying, caring and investing in their lives
  • Meet regularly with your volunteers
  • Build into your team with regular training and equipping
  • Partner with parents of the students
    • Clearly share your plans, goals, and strategy with parents so they understand the direction and can have buy in
    • Create avenues of consistent contact with parents (regular e-newsletters, parent meetings, etc.)
    • Become aware of the needs of the parents
  • Attend weekly staff team meetings
  • Provide a weekly report to the senior pastor of your goals, accomplishments, prayers and praises
  • Network with other youth ministers in the community
  • Assist in other ministry needs as deemed necessary by the senior pastor
